SYAFRI ALI
SUNG + TANG
Coconut frond and waste materials
Hanging lamp and Fruit bowl
Syafri Ali is a quiet individual who converses through his work. He takes delight in renewing values in discarded items that have been deemed unusable scraps by way of re-exploring materials to the point of colliding physical traits. For the last 3 years, this exploration had led him to fashion new utilities for palm fronds, for example, as lamps, food trays, stationaries and small home storage.
For the first product, I had considered the developing stage of Syafri Ali's passionate home business and one of the keywords that I think would best describe it is that of a cocoon that is going through stages of metamorphosis. Coincidentally, cocoon in Batak Karo translates into "Lampusung" or "Sung" - a perfect sounding word for his lamps that signifies warmth. This warmth in metamorphosis symbolizes a growth that brings us to the second product in the form of fruit trays: "Tang" which means maturity in Batak Karo: as we mature, we are gradually able to provide food for the family
