Tiurlan T.S. Manurung established Deli Maya Sari and expanded her knowledge of the textile arts by sourcing pattern books and references during her travels to Europe and Japan. Over the years, she had narrowed down her needlework speciality to embroidery and cross stitching, employing this knowledge to fabricate products with traditional and contemporary patterns that has now become uniquely known for its hand-made quality.
The core process in Deli Maya Sari is tessellation or repeating pattern tiling, and to highlight it, I attempted to focus on the concept of relationship: the state of being connected (sambung). The Northen Sumatrans or Batak Karo are known for their tight familial bonds wherever they are, and tableware are the perfect products as a functional symbol in family gathering during meals. The lizard (or cicak) is a local icon that signifies Batak Karo kinship throughout the nation, nevertheless, no matter how far they travel, they will gravitate towards the four udders (or adop-adop in Batak Karo): the fertility of a mother.
